The Union Government has enacted a Geographical Indication act 1999 and Geographical Indication rules 2002 for registration and protection of goods and products to be registered under Geographical Indication Registry. In handicrafts Geographical Indication has already been obtained for the following Tamil Nadu handicrafts.

• Pathamadai Mats
• Toda Embroidery (The Nilgris)
• Mamallapuram Stone Carving
• Swamimalai Bronze Icons
• Temple jewelry of Vadaseri
• Thanjavur Art Plate
• Thanjavur Paintings
• Thanjavur Dolls

Further, due to the continuous efforts of the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has released the Geographical Indication Certificates obtained through the Geographical Indication Registry for the following handicrafts on 23.10.2021.

• Kallakurichi Wood Carving
• Karupur kalamkari painting
• Thajavur Pith Work
• Arumbavur Wood Carving
